The formation is located about two kilometres beneath the surface and is a part of the vast ,square-kilometre Williston Basin that underlies . Saskatchewan is the second largest oil producing province in Canada (after Alberta). In there were o active wells in the province. Heavy and light crude oil are produced from the Lloydminster, Kindersley-Kerrobert, Swift Current and Weyburn-Estevan areas. The South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) is located in the southern part of Alberta and Saskatchewan and includes 5 major urban centers: Saskatoon, Swift Current, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat (see Figure ). Three transgressive-regressive systems tracts are interpreted in the Bakken Formation in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan based on analysis of cores and well logs.
